I can't help but notice the Compare the Meerkat adverts on TV at the moment. The only reason why I say this is that everytime I see Alexander the meerkat, I keep having to do a double-take. They say everyone has a doppel-ganger and Alexander is no exception; just check out my mate Whiskey the Whippet. Uncanny!!!

New Kid on The Block

I love to sit on the window sill watching life go by. Summer sun and lazy days; cat heaven. However, it’s hasn’t passed me by that there seems to be another furry individual now living in the neighbourhood.

It’s not a fox or even a squirrel. No, it’s a bunny rabbit called Erica ……. and she’s almost as big as me. Due to her size and enormous ears, she already has my respect but I’ll be keeping a close eye on her; she’s cute.

The problem for her is that she’s being kept in the garden so she’s at risk of fleas, just like I am. A lot of owners don’t realize that this is something to be aware of when rabbits are kept in the garden but fortunately for Erica, I’ve already slipped a business card into her run so it won’t be long before her owners know about www.NoMoreFleas.co.uk

Man or mouse?

Okay, so I'm not the best mouse catcher in the neighbourhood ........... but in my defence , I know a couple of Terriers and they're not too hot on the old hunting front either !!

And quite frankly, I think my mum and dad are pretty happy that I'm not the Linford Christie of the cat world. Mice carry things like worms and whether you own a cat or a dog, you'd rather we were slow coaches!

There are three types of tapeworms in dogs, only two in cats, and not all tapeworm medicines will kill all types.

Dipylidium is a common tapeworm, which can infest both cats and dogs and uses the flea as it’s intermediate host. Basically, the fleas eat the eggs of the tapeworm and then these fleas are swallowed by the dog or cat while they groom themselves. I know, it sounds disgusting, but we do have to clean ourselves !!

The flea (with the worm eggs inside it) is now in the cat or dog!! This is just one way a cat or dog can develop a worm infestation. It’s why it’s so important to worm us if we ever have fleas. A worm infestation can cause diarrhoea, constipation, anaemia or the obstruction of the bowel.

Cats and Dogs can become infected from a number of sources including:-

- Picking up worms from grass or soil in public places.
- Puppies can be born with worms of Toxocara canis if the mother is infected and the larvae have passed into the mother’s milk.
- hunting of mice, rats and other animals as they can act as intermediate hosts

I like to party just as hard as the next cat, so when I got an invite to go to Billy the Boxer's birthday party .......... I said yes immediately. He chose 'super-heroes' for the theme and on the night, he looked good. And he knew it.

Now even though I'm a bit of an extrovert, I actually find parties a little stressful but fortunately the nice people at CEVA have come up with a great product called Feliway. Bad breath or bad teeth ...... what's worse?

Well, I think they're both as bad as each other. But it's not easy to manage for us four-legged friends, demonstrated aptly by my friend Burt, seen here having a go at cleaning his teeth with his master's brush!!

I haven't needed to go down the toothbrush route as my mum and dad give me Breath & Dental-Care treats (available under Related Products when you checkout on www.NoMoreDirect.co.uk ........ that's my shameless plug done). The great thing is that they kill two birds with one stone as they freshen my breath AND help control tartar build-up.

How do you get rid of fleas?

'Fleas' ........ they don't just make us cats itch. Just the mention of the word makes everyone I know start to scratch. So, what are they, how do they exist and what can we do to get rid of them?

Got an itch yet? You're thinking about it aren't you? Go on scratch it, it'll make you feel better !

Well, fleas thrive in warm, moist environments and climates. The main flea food is blood from a host animal. Host animals come in all shapes and sizes like cats (surely not!), dogs, humans, etc.

Flea saliva, like other biting skin parasites, contains an ingredient that softens, or "digests" the host's skin (yuk!) for easier penetration and feeding. The saliva of fleas is irritating and allergenic and it's the saliva that causes all of the itching, scratching, and other signs seen with Flea Allergy Dermatitis, or FAD.

Fleas have four main stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The total flea life cycle can range from a couple weeks to several months, depending on environmental conditions.

So, now that you’re loved one (pet that is) has them, what’s the best way of getting rid of them?

Fleas actually spend just a small portion of their time on the pet; they live in carpets and the environment and hop on your pet when they want a meal. Environmental control is just as important as flea control on your pet!

So, as well as using say a spot-on treatment to kill the fleas (available from www.NoMoreFleas.co.uk), you need to consider other things such as hoovering regularly and washing pet bedding/blankets. Regular grooming and checking for parasites is also essential to stay on top of problems with parasites. This of course will ensure you’re rewarded with big love from your pet.
